New addition Jason Taylor has 13 NFL seasons and 127.5 sacks on his résumé.
Unit: Linebackers
Depth Chart: (Outside) Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, Jason Taylor, Jamaal Westerman, (Inside) David Harris, Bart Scott, Kenwin Cummings, Lance Laury, Ezra Butler, Joshua Mauga, Cory Reamer, Brashton Satele.
On the Bubble: Cummings, Laury, Butler, Mauga, Reamer, Satele.
Player to Watch: Taylor. It’s going to take a long time before Jets fans get used to seeing him in green – if ever. Two questions: How is Taylor’s surgically repaired shoulder? At 36 (by opening day), how much is left in the tank?
Wild Card: Westerman. The former Rutgers standout flashed potential last season as an UDFA, with Rex Ryan singing his praises, but he never solidified a significant role. The addition of Taylor hurts his chances, but Westerman has the ability to compete for a spot in the rotation.
Analysis: This is one of the deepest areas on the team, one of the reasons why they have no interest in Adalius Thomas. The big story is former Dolphin great Jason Taylor, who was shelved in the offseason due to a shoulder scope. Taylor has to get healthy (his reps will be monitored) and find a role. Chances are, he will be used as a third-down pass rusher, but it’ll be interesting to see if he plays any linebacker or defensive end in the base defense. His arrival will cut into Bryan Thomas’ playing time. Chances are, it’ll be Taylor and Calvin Pace as the bookend rushers in the nickel package. Unlike last summer, Pace can go about his business without a looming suspension hanging over his head.
The most competitive position on the team is inside linebacker, according to Ryan. Obviously, David Harris and Bart Scott are rock-solid as the starters, but Kenwin Cummings (an off-season star), former Seahawk Lance Laury and UDFA Cory Reamer will be leading the mix for backup jobs. Laury will be in a Larry Izzo-like role, earning his keep on special teams. Reamer, a rookie from Alabama, already is a favorite of the coaching staff. Basically, he was a walk-on, impressing the staff with his ability to digest the playbook.
