The "Hard Knocks" hype is in overdrive. On the same day that Rex Ryan and HBO suits conducted a conference call with the media to promote this summer's training-camp reality show, the network gave fans a 12-minute infomercial late Wednesday night -- a little tease, if you will.
HBO touched on some of the storylines it hopes to develop during its five prime-time episodes, such as:
Ryan's mandate to win a Super Bowl. Year 2 of the Mark Sanchez era. ("If we just find a quarterback, we'll be all right," he says facetiously.) The players' fondness for Ryan. Ryan's fire and brimstone. Ryan's humor. Ryan's brashness. LaDainian Tomlinson's quest to prove he's not washed up. Kyle Wilson, the pride of Piscataway, N.J., returning home as a first-round draft pick.
There wasn't any behind-the-scenes stuff in the preview, mostly interviews with Ryan and assorted players, banging the drums for what promises to be a compelling training camp. The opening scene shows the end of the Jets' loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game, setting the stage for the 2010 goal.
No doubt, the Jets will be entertaining, and the prime-time exposure should help move some PSLs, which will make owner Woody Johnson a happy man. Now if they could just sign their best player and their No. 1 draft pick ...
