The Jets will face the Chargers Sunday at Met Life Stadium without one of their best run-stuffers, DT Mike DeVito (sprained knee), who was declared inactive.
DeVito was injured Thursday in practice and was too sore Friday to get on the field, prompting the Jets to sign DT Martin Tevaseu from the practice squad.
Rookie DT Kenrick Ellis, not Marcus Dixon, will start for DeVito -- at least that's what Rex Ryan said on Friday. That is a curious choice, considering Ellis' lack of experience. He made his NFL debut last Monday night against the Dolphins, but Ryan said he wants another widebody on the line to counter the Chargers' inside running game.
The news out of the Chargers is that star TE Antonio Gates, out the last three games with a foot injury, is active for the game. That should help QB Philip Rivers, who has been a little off in recent weeks.
The Jets' other inactives are: QB Kevin O'Connell, WR Eron Riley, RB Bilal Powell, CB Isaiah Trufant, LB Garrett McIntyre and C Colin Baxter.
The Chargers' inactives are DE Luis Castillo, LB Darryl Gamble, LB Gerald Hayes, DE Ogemdi Nwagbuo, WR Bryan Walters and CB Shareece Wright.
