Rex's fine ($75k) is steep, but fair

At first glance, it seems like an excessive fine for one F-bomb -- $75,000. But, in the view of the NFL, this wasn't just one F-bomb. Rex Ryan is a repeat offender, and there's no doubt that factored into the amount.

In February, 2010, during Super Bowl week in Miami, Ryan was fined $50,000 by the Jets by making an obscene gesture toward an unruly fan at a Mixed Martial Arts event.

He apparently didn't learn his lesson, so the league came back at him even harder.

By now, you've probably seen the video, Ryan telling a fan to "Shut the f--- up" after the fan yelled to him, "Hey, Rex, Belichick is better than you." That was eight days ago at halftime of the Jets' loss to the Patriots.

Ryan reacted like many of us would in that situation, but here's the difference: He's an authority figure, representing his franchise and the league, and he used a profanity toward a paying customer at an NFL game. In that sense, it's worse than the Miami incident.

And he's paying the price.
