Former scout breaks down the Jets
By Jane McManus
In the early 1970s, Connie Carberg was hired by the Jets, eventually becoming the first female talent scout in the NFL. She spent long nights breaking down tape and writing player reports, eventually spotting Mark Gastineau and bringing him to the Jets.
Now living in Florida, she will once come to the Jets training camp to see old friends and evaluate the prospects. I asked for her assessment of the 2012 Jets so far.
Q. Who is the best player on the roster? Let's start with defense.
Carberg: You know (Darrelle) Revis is in a class by himself. I pray he's going to be there (in training camp). He's one of the most amazing football players I've seen in a long time.
And I'd add David Harris on defense. I think the world of him. He's smart. He doesn't have the greatest speed but he’s smart and always around the ball. He's a great locker room guy.
Q. On offense?
Carberg: Nick (Mangold) and Brick (D'Brickashaw Ferguson). And I'm a big fan of Dustin Keller. He and Mark (Sanchez) really do have chemistry.
Q. What are the Jets' biggest challenges?
Carberg: The camaraderie. Getting back the locker room. I think Rex (Ryan) taking part is good. Getting back to Cortland is good. The two times they were in Cortland they went to the AFC Championship Game. That's not an accident.
Q. What's a concern on the field?
Carberg: The running game. It's got to be there. I'm hoping (rookie RB Terrance) Ganaway is there to give Shonn Greene a little breathing room. It's hard to get a Darren Sproles. We don't have a scat back. With Tony Sparano, I am so excited about Tony. Everyone in Florida is very upset he got let go (by the Dolphins_. He never lost the locker room.
Q. What's your take on the Tim Tebow acquisition?
Carberg: This is so interesting. I can see it really working. I can see Tim and Mark being able to work together and do something, but I worry about the fans and the writers giving it a chance. But I really believe, given the kind of human beings that they are, I think they can work it. But the whole thing scares me. I'm anxious to see what Rex and Sparano have in store.
