Live: Scrimmage update
By Rich Cimini
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The annual Green & White scrimmage began at 6 p.m., with an estimated crowd of about 6,000 watching the debut of Tim Tebow. Some early notes:
• Tebow received a loud ovation when he came on with the second-team offense, replacing starter Mark Sanchez. How'd he do? Tebow was Tebow, moving around the pocket and showing of his scrambling skills. In his first two possessions, a total of eight plays, he scrambled three times for 14 yards. He threw only one pass, a bomb to Dexter Jackson that fell incomplete.
• Sanchez appeared in three possessions before the first break, a total of 12 plays. Playing behind a patchwork line, down three starters (RG Brandon Moore, C Nick Mangold and RT Wayne Hunter), he completed four of seven passes for 30 yards. His best play was a 22-yard completion to Dustin Keller, who came free on a crossing route. Sanchez took all the first-ream reps.
• WR Santonio Holmes, who missed the last two practices with "general soreness," was a surprise participant. Rex Ryan had hinted that he might take a cautious approach with Holmes, but he started and caught a 10-yard pass from Sanchez.
• The early defensive stars were LB Calvin Pace and rookie LB Demario Davis, both of whom recorded a "sack." (No tackling the QBs.) Davis played in the first-team sub group and showed his speed on an inside blitz, chasing down Sanchez. S LaRon Landry also had pressure on a back-side blitz.
