Sanchez benched, McElroy in
By Rich Cimini
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- At 3:09 p.m., the Jets' universe was rocked.
Mark Sanchez was benched, and the Jets have a quarterback controversy. And Tim Tebow isn't involved. Surprise, surprise.
Fed up with his atrocious offense, Rex Ryan made the desperation move of all time, replacing Sanchez with Greg McElroy. It came with 4:48 left in the third quarter and the Jets trailing, 3-0. On his first series, McElroy led the Jets to a go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard scoring pass to Jeff Cumberland.
The same McElroy who had no previous NFL experience. The same McElroy who had no first-team practice reps during the week.
Here's one for the conspiracy theorists: Did the Jets de-activate Tebow as a way to promote McElroy to No. 2 without hurting Tebow's feelings?
Make no mistake, this story is evolving and will keeps fans buzzing for days, weeks and maybe months.
