Giants, Jets to honor shooting victims
By Matt Ehalt
The Giants will memorialize the fallen teachers and students of Sandy Hook Elementary School of Newtown, Conn., on Sunday.
The Giants and Jets will honor the victims of the shooting in Newtown, Conn., by putting the initials S.H.E.S. (Sandy Hook Elementary School) on their helmets for their games this week, as first reported by the NFL Network.
The Giants will have the initials handwritten on each helmet for their game against Atlanta on Sunday, while the Jets announced they will have a circular decal with S.H.E.S. for their game Monday night at Tennessee.
The official Twitter account of the Giants tweeted out a photo Saturday afternoon of the helmet, which shows S.H.E.S. written in black and descending vertically on the red stripe that runs down the back of the team's helmets.
"#Giants to honor students and teachers of #SandyHookElementary and community of #Newtown w/S.H.E.S. on back of helmets," the tweet said.
The Jets will also have a moment of silence before their home game against San Diego on Dec. 23. The Giants do not return home until Dec. 30, when they play Philadelphia in the season finale.
All NFL games this week will have a moment of silence before the national anthem to honor those who were killed in the shooting Friday morning. Twenty-six people were killed inside the school, including 20 children.
Jets coach Rex Ryan offered his prayers to those affected by the shooting during his conference call with the media Saturday afternoon.
"Obviously, thoughts and prayers to all the people impacted by that tragedy," Ryan said. "All of our thoughts and prayers go to all those people there. Just a horrific deal that happened there."
