Source: 49ers cool on Revis ... for now

By Rich Cimini

There was feverish speculation Wednesday about a possible Darrelle Revis-to-the-49ers trade, but don't count on that happening anytime soon, if at all. ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen, citing a source, said Thursday that the 49ers have no interest in Revis at this time.

That doesn't mean they won't be interested in April. This is, after all, the team that insisted it didn't have any interest in Peyton Manning even though it worked him out.

The point is, no team will trade for Revis at this stage of the offseason, especially because he's less than five months removed from ACL surgery. Teams will wait until he's closer to 100 percent, and the Jets are prepared to wait it out as well. They might take it into the summer before deciding whether to trade him, re-sign him or let him play out his contract.

The 49ers cited a deep cornerback class in the draft, salary-cap concerns and Revis' injury as reasons for their current stance, per Mort. They have the ammunition to make such a trade (11 draft picks, including No. 31 and No. 34), but they also have several highly paid defensive players and they face the prospect of paying big money to QB Colin Kaepernick in the future. They're also a team that prefers to build through the draft.

But we'll see. It's early in the process and things could change.
