Smith will need to improve rushing skills

By Mike Mazzeo

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets GM John Idzik said that one of the reasons he drafted Geno Smith in the second round was the West Virginia quarterback’s ability to run read-option plays.

"Certainly when you have someone with his athleticism, his elusiveness, that is certainly a fine trait for a quarterback, so that comes into play, yes," Idzik said Friday night.

The numbers, however, show that Smith is going to need a lot of improvement in that area. In his final two college seasons, Smith carried the ball 122 times for 118 yards.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, he scrambled for 253 yards and averaged 7.2 yards per scramble in 2012. However, he averaged just 2.6 yards per carry on 11 designed runs.
