Injury Report: Berry lost for year; Ivory sits
By Jane McManus
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Jets cornerback Aaron Berry sustained a season-ending ACL injury this morning in practice.
A source close to Berry said he will decide tomorrow on a surgery date to repair his knee, but it will likely be within the week. He plans to rehab at the Jets facility in Florham Park.
The injury occurred during a standard 1-on-1 drill, where one receiver tries to beat a cornerback downfield to catch a pass. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound player fell to the turf after going down hard after covering receiver Joseph Collins. Berry walked off the field unassisted, but with a limp.
Berry was competing for the fourth spot in the rotation behind established vets Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson and first-round pick Dee Milliner, who has not yet been signed and isn’t in camp. Ellis Lankster is also in the mix. Berry, a fourth-year player out of Pittsburgh, is signed through 2013.
IVORY SITS: Running back Chris Ivory did not participate in his first day of training camp as a Jet after sustaining a hamstring injury last week. He said he hoped to be back by Sunday practicing with the team.
"It's a little tightness. I just want to take precautions," Ivory said.
Running backs coach Anthony Lynn echoed the expectations.
"We held him out today," Lynn said, "I’m sure he’ll be able to practice in a couple of days."
Joe McKnight passed his physical and as taken of the Physically Unable to Perform list. The running back declined to talk to reporters however, and used a word that indicated his frustration level when asked on his way off the field.
Ryan noted that, with Mike Goodson out, getting the running back corps in good shape had a little more urgency. Ivory’s specialty is more his physical style of running, so Ryan is more eager to see him in the full-contact practices.
"He is a physical runner and probably a little different with the pads on," Ryan said.
Wideout Santonio Holmes, as expected, was not practicing, and there is currently no timeline for his return. On Friday Holmes said he couldn’t say with certainty he’d return this season.
