Idzik hopes for Goodson's return

By Rich Cimini

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- General manager John Idzik, meeting the media for the first time in training camp, was tight-lipped Saturday regarding the mysterious absence of running back Mike Goodson. Idzik called it a private matter, adding he's not sure when -- or if -- Goodson will return.

But it sounds like the New York Jets want him back.

Jets GM John Idzik met the media Saturday at training camp.
"It's our hope that Mike can come back and rejoin the team," Idzik said.

Goodson, facing drug and weapon charges from a May arrest, is on the did-not-report list, with the support of the organization. Idzik declined to say whether he's in daily commuincation with Goodson.

"I'm not going to get into it," he said. "It's a delicate, private matter, but I can say we were aware it was going to happen. We understand the circumstances surrounding it."

Idzik addressed other topics in a wide-ranging interview:

QB DECISION: Idzik opened a can of worms when he said he will have a "pretty big role" in choosing between Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. Idzik declined to acknowledge that Rex Ryan has the final say on the all-important decision.

HOLMES INJURY: Idzik said Santonio Holmes' return from a serious foot injury "is a tough one to gauge. ... I wish I could have a timeline for you. The next few weeks will be very telling." On Friday, Holmes intimated that he could miss the season. "I would hope not," Idzik said.

A BUNCH OF BULL: Idzik said he had no problem with Ryan's recent and daring adventure in Spain, where he ran with the bulls. Asked his initial reaction, Idzik said, "Just run faster than the bulls." Idzik said Ryan told him about it beforehand.

"I thought it was pretty cool," the GM said. "It was a lifelong dream with his son, Payton. It was a family thing. For them to do something special, that was pretty neat. ... If something was hazardous to his position with the Jets, I don't think Rex would do it."
