Holmes: 'Right now, I can't run'

By Rich Cimini

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Santonio Holmes broke into a jog as he headed toward the interview tent Monday after practice, perhaps a show for the cameras -- a way to counter the skepticism that has emerged regarding his recovery from a LisFranc foot injury. Once he got to the tent, though, Holmes didn't paint an optimistic picture.

"Right now, I can't run," said the veteran receiver, giving a rather blunt update on his condition.

Holmes, 10 months removed from the first of two surgeries, said he's working hard in his rehab, hoping to get back as soon as possible. But he didn't provide a timetable. Asked if he will be ready for the Bucs in Week 1, Holmes said, "I can't really count that far ahead right now."

Publicly, the Jets have't ruled him out for the opener, but it's a long shot. The better question might be, will he be back by October?

Holmes said he's taking it day-by-day, but "the trainers are saying week-to-week."

He still hasn't done full-speed running or cutting on a field. He increased his activity Sunday, when he started light cuts as he snared passes from a JUGS machine.

Rex Ryan praised Holmes' attitude and work ethic, saying the former Super Bowl MVP is in "phenomenal" shape -- which depends on your definition of "in shape." After all, he's still not running.

Holmes declined to comment on an report in which someone close to the organization questioned whether Holmes is actually trying his hardest to get back as soon as possible. Because he might be playing for a contract, the report claimed that Holmes doesn't want to jeopardize his future by coming back too soon. He's a mercurial personality, leaving some to wonder about his motivation.

Ryan said "it's too early to tell" if Holmes will be ready by opening day. "I certainly hope he is because he's a difference-maker when he's on the field."

Holmes is making a guaranteed $7.5 million this season, so he's not going anywhere.
