Practice Report: Holmes on the field
By Matt Ehalt
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring/foot) appears to be inching closer to a return as he participated in team stretching, although he eventually made his way to the bike area during the portion of practice open to the media Wednesday.
While it appeared he didn't practice, Holmes being on the field with a helmet on is the closest he's come to practicing since suffering the hamstring injury on Sept. 29 against the Titans.
Holmes has missed the last four games and it should become more clear later in the week whether the veteran will be able to return Sunday against the Bengals. Holmes has played in just four games.
Tight end Jeff Cumberland, who was not on the injury report last week, made his way to the stationary bike area early on. Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson (shoulder) was a late arrival to practice. Running back Chris Ivory (hamstring) spent some time in the bike area as well.
Cornerback Dee Milliner (hamstring) and running back Bilal Powell (neck) were practicing. Milliner returned Sunday against New England.
Before Wednesday's practice, the Jets signed former Patriots cornerback Ras-I Dowling to the practice squad. Dowling had trouble staying healthy with the Patriots, and he spent the open portion on the stationary bike.
