Salary survey says ... Jets rank 159th

By Rich Cimini

In the current ESPN The Magazine -- the money issue -- you will find a salary ranking of pretty much every professional sports team in the world. Specifically, the data covers 294 teams in 15 leagues in seven sports across the world.

Obviously, they're comparing a lot of apples to a lot of oranges, with a bunch of other fruits thrown into the equation, but let's play along. The teams are ranked based on average annual salary per athlete (in 2013), and to find the New York Jets, you have to scroll down ...

To No. 159. Yep, there they are, listed just behind the Washington Redskins and ahead of the Buffalo Bills. The Jets average $1.81 million per player, which means nothing compared to, say, a European soccer team. (I must admit, though, I find it interesting the Jets are barely ahead of the moribund New York Islanders.) In the context of the NFL, the Jets rank 25th on the list, with their average salary down nearly 24 percent from the previous year.

Here's another way to look at it: Four players on the Jets make roughly the same as one player on the Manchester City soccer team. Wonder how John Idzik's money-spending philosophy would be received in the European Premier League.
