Holmes wants to get back

By Jane McManus

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — On Tuesday, Rex Ryan reminded the Jets that there aren’t too many opportunities to win a Super Bowl — but this team is still in the running. Don’t waste it, Ryan told them.

Santonio Holmes is one of the few players who knows what it’s like to win the NFL championship. He was up at 6 a.m. to get ready for the the first practice of the week leading up to the wild card game against the Colts on Saturday night.

The Jets clutch wide receiver knows that this part of the season is why he was brought on board in the offseason along with a number of high-profile acquisitions. He remembered the first conversation he had with Ryan, who was a defensive coordinator at Baltimore when the Steelers won in 2008.

“When I got the call, the first thing Rex talked to me about was (that) he had a chance to win a Super Bowl and I was the guy that took it away from him.  I know that he believes I’m here for one reason and that’s to win championships.  Having (LaDainian Tomlinson) as a part of this team also, Jason Taylor, (Brodney) Pool, Braylon (Edwards), he’s a big-play guy, you can’t forget any of these guys that we have here that have been making plays for us all season that have to continue to make plays come Saturday.”

Holmes was suspended for the first four games of the season. But has come back to make a difference in the Jets offense. He made key plays in four of the Jets late wins, and has 52 catches for 746 yards.

“(We need to) just play fast, play physical, get after those guys and I think we should definitely have a chance to win.,” Holmes said. “There aren’t any big issues to worry about, so just get out and play fast football.”
