Jets sign LB Edds, former Dolphins pick

By Rich Cimini

The New York Jets extended tryouts to 37 players at last weekend's rookie camp. They wound up signing only two out of the 37. Yeah, the NFL is a tough way to make a living.

On Monday, the team announced the signings of linebacker A.J. Edds and tackle Markus Zusevics, both free agents. The two players have a common background: They both played at Iowa and they both played with the New England Patriots.

Edds was a fourth-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2010, but he blew out a knee, missed the season and was released the following year. He bounced between the Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, playing a total of 11 games for them in 2011.

Rex Ryan mentioned Edds after the second day of the Jets' camp. Edds started out as the strong-side linebacker and, without warning, he was switched to the weak side. He made a seamless transition, according to Ryan.

"[He's] really a smart guy and he looks like he's got some physical tools as well," Ryan said, adding, "He's able to take, grasp, not just his thing, but see the overall picture of a defense, and that's important because a lot of times, sometimes on that roster, you need guys to play multiple positions. He's been impressive that way to me. Of all the guys, I think he's really jumped out to me probably more than any of them."

Zusevics (6-foot-5, 300 pounds) signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and spent the season on injured reserve. He missed each of the last two seasons with a torn pectoral muscle.

Also Monday, the Jets waived two players -- wide receiver Dwight Jones and offensive lineman Jacolby Ashworth.
