For Jets, a Holmes-coming in Week 3
By Rich Cimini
CINCINNATI -- For the better part of his four seasons with the New York Jets, Santonio Holmes was a pain in the rear end for some in the organization. Now he could come back to bite them in that very place.
Holmes has agreed to terms with the Chicago Bears, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, which means we can look forward to a Holmes-Jets reunion early in the season. In Week 3, the Jets host the Bears on ESPN's "Monday Night Football" -- a good matchup that just got better.
If Holmes' surgically repaired foot is healthy, he could reboot his career in the Bears' offense. He probably will be the Bears' No. 3 receiver, behind Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, meaning he won't see any double coverage. Surrounded by those guys, Holmes will be an afterthought for opposing defenses. Chances are, he will be used a lot in the slot, so get ready for a dose of Holmes versus Kyle Wilson.
Memo to the Jets: Cover him well. The last thing MetLife Stadium wants to see is Holmes scoring a touchdown and taunting the home folk with his silly jet-plane celebration.
Holmes made one of the great plays in Jets history, that unbelievable catch in the end zone to help beat the New England Patriots in the 2010 playoffs, but he was never the same after signing a five-year, $40 million extension. Injuries took a toll on the former Super Bowl MVP, and his "diva" attitude rubbed some teammates the wrong way. When the Jets dumped him in the offseason, it was addition by subtraction.
But now he has a great chance to resurrect his career and enjoy a little payback along the way.
