Shaun Ellis visits the Patriots
By Rich Cimini
How bad would it look if Shaun Ellis and Jerricho Cotchery, two of the longest-tenured and most respected players in the Jets' locker room, ended up with the Patriots?
Don't look now, but ... Ellis, an unrestricted free agent, worked out Thursday for the Patriots, as reported by Mike Rodak of ESPNBoston.com. The Pats are obviously in the market, having auditioned several defensive linemen.
Ellis in a Patriots uniform would be surreal. During his 11 years with the Jets, Ellis often expressed his dislike for the Patriots. He was absolutely frustrated by the Patriots' dominance, but he gained a measure of redemption in last season's playoffs. He sacked Tom Brady twice in the Jets' stunning upset.
The Jets have made an offer to Ellis, but as reported by ESPNNewYork.com, it's a one-year offer for the veterans' minimum -- $910,000.
Now that Cotchery is on the market, released Thursday by the Jets, it would be a totally Belichickian move if the Patriots brought in the veteran receiver for a look-see. It would be a Jets nightmare, seeing Cotchery and Ellis in Patriots' colors.
In other free-agent news, the Jets have parted ways with free-agent S James Ihedigbo, a source confirmed Ihedigbo, an outstanding special-teams player, won't re-sign with the Jets.
