Analyzing the penalty problem

By Rich Cimini

One area the Jets need to clean up is the number of penalties. They have committed 45 penalties for 388 yards, a lot when you consider they had no penalties in the season opener. Since the first game, they've been averaging 7.5 penalties per game.

Their total is the 11th-highest in the league. Who are the leading culprits? Here's a breakdown of the multiple offenders:

DEFENSE:

Antonio Cromartie -- 5 for 51 yards (one declined)
Jim Leonhard -- 2 for 22 yards

OFFENSE:

Wayne Hunter -- 4 for 35 yards
Nick Mangold -- 3 for 25 yards
Matthew Mulligan -- 3 for 19 yards
Brandon Moore -- 3 for 15 yards
Matt Slauson -- 2 for 15 yards

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Marquice Cole -- 2 for 25 yards
Nick Bellore -- 2 for 25 yards
