New York Jets: Billy Cundiff
On the day rookies are due to report, Geno Smith signed a four-year contract, the Jets announced Monday morning. As a second-round pick (39th overall), his deal is for $5 million, based on the rookie wage scale. Figure about 70 percent of the contract ($3.5 million) is guaranteed. That was the primary holdup, according to a source. As a quarterback, Smith wanted more guaranteed money than what the 39th pick usually receives. He was playing off the Colin Kaepernick and Andy Dalton second-round contracts in 2011.
First-round picks Dee Milliner and Sheldon Richardson remain unsigned, but their deals should be done in short order.
Also Monday, the Jets are working out several veteran free agents. The biggest names are WR Austin Collie (Colts), WR Laurent Robinson (Jaguars) and PK Billy Cundiff (49ers), according to reports and sources. Perhaps concerned about Santonio Holmes (foot), GM John Idzik is looking to add a veteran before the team departs Thursday for Cortland. Collie and Robinson each has a history of concussions, so we're not talking about sure things.
