New York Jets: Jonathan Grimes

Jets waive Grimes, Muir

October, 30, 2012
The Jets created two roster spots Tuesday, waiving RB Jonathan Grimes and releasing DT Daniel Muir.

It means the Jets are optimistic that RB Bilal Powell (dislocated shoulder) and NT Kenrick Ellis (sprained knee) will be ready to play when they return from the bye week, Nov. 11 against the Seahawks.

Grimes likely will go to the practice squad if he clears waivers. The Jets signed him five weeks ago from the Texans' practice squad. He played in two games (a total of 11 offensive snaps), rushing twice for six yards and catching two passes.

Muir played in three games (41 defensive snaps), recording three tackles.

The Jets also released OT Dennis Landolt from the practice squad.

McKnight in green of defense at practice

September, 26, 2012
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Joe McKnight was on the Jets' practice field in a green No. 25 jersey, indicating that he really is moving to defense. He practiced with his new group, the defensive backs, after coach Rex Ryan confirmed the Jets were going to convert him into a cornerback in the wake of a season-ending injury to Pro Bowl corner Darrelle Revis.

Also notable was a new running back, Jonathan Grimes, wearing the while No. 21 most recently belonging to LaDainian Tomlinson.

As far as injuries, Stephen Hill (hamstring) and Bart Scott (toe) were the only two Jets who did not practice with the team. Both worked out on the bikes.

TE Dustin Keller (hamstring), LB Bryan Thomas (hamstring), WR Patrick Turner (hamstring), FB John Conner (knee) and S Eric Smith (hip/knee) were limited.

A whole raft of Jets will show up on the injury report but practiced fully: DT Sione Po'uha (lower back), QB Mark Sanchez (lower back), CB Antonio Cromartie (shoulder), LB Nick Bellore (shoulder), DE Mike DeVito (calf), OL Brandon Moore (hip), LaRon Landry (heel), Isaiah Trufant (ankle), Nick Mangold (wrist), CB Ellis Lankster (lower back) and Calvin Pace (Achilles).

Jets sign RB from Texans practice squad

September, 25, 2012
One day after Rex Ryan put his running backs on notice by saying "we left some yards on the field," the Jets signed RB Jonathan Grimes from the Texans' practice squad, a source confirmed.

Grimes is an undrafted rookie from William & Mary who impressed the Texans in training camp. In the preseason, he rushed 28 times for 130 yards, a 4.6 average. He was one of their final cuts and landed on the practice squad.

Grimes joins a crowded but unproductive backfield. Starter Shonn Greene, coming off back-to-back poor performances, is averaging only 2.8 yards per carry. Look for backup Bilal Powell (4.0 average) and possibly Joe McKnight to have an expanded role.

On Monday, Ryan gave a lukewarm endorsement of Greene, who's supposed to be the focal point of the Jets' Ground & Pound offense.

"We'd like to get him going more, without question," Ryan said. "We'd like to see him get that average up around over 4 yards a carry. Again, we'll see. We'll keep working at it and hope we can get some things going here."

The Grimes signing was first reported by the New York Daily News. The roster stands at 53. The Jets will have an opening when they put CB Darrelle Revis (knee) on injured reserve. He could be replaced by free agent DB Chris Carr, who is scheduled to arrive later this week for a tryout, a source confirmed. Carr has played for the Raiders, Titans and Ravens. Ryan has always been a fan of Carr, who was cut by the Vikings at the end of the preseason.

Interestingly, Carr attended Boise State a few years ahead of Kyle Wilson, who replaces Revis in the starting lineup.
