GREENBURGH, N.Y. – While the Knicks become engulfed in Jeremy Lin-mania, somewhere lost in the madness is Toney Douglas.
Lin is doing heavy lifting as the Knicks' new point guard. He played 36 minutes Saturday against the Nets and played the entire second, third and fourth quarters on his way to 45 minutes against Utah Monday night.
Meanwhile, Douglas’ minutes have been diminishing. He played a season-low three minutes Monday after playing 13 Saturday against New Jersey. He played just eight minutes Friday in Boston, even before Lin suddenly became the Knicks newest star.
Lin's control of the offense makes it easy to move rookie Iman Shumpert -- who the Knicks previously hoped would answer their point guard woes -- to shooting guard and small forward, where he appears more comfortable. coach Mike D’Antoni said he likes the combination of Lin and Shumpert in the backcourt. He also said Shumpert can thrive as a swingman although he sees the rookie’s future as a point guard.
Shumpert was the first guard off the bench Monday and will likely be the sixth man again against Washington Wednesday. But with Lin, Shumpert, Landry Fields and Bill Walker all seeing time in the backcourt, there isn't much room for Douglas -- who has been struggling with his shot, leading to rumors that the shoulder he injured last season may be hurting again.
Douglas has shot 3-for-11 in the last three games and 0-for-7 from 3-point range. He had two airballs Monday night from behind the arc before making his first midrange jumper.
“I was afraid he was going to hit a couple fans with the balls he was throwing up there. I didn’t want to hurt anybody,” D’Antoni said with a laugh at Tuesday’s practice, when discussing Douglas’s limited playing time against Utah. “It was a little bit of Jeremy (playing well), a little that he’s going though a slump. We’ve got to get him out of it. But he’ll be fine. He works hard and we’ll go back to him. But that was the reason. I just didn’t really feel real comfortable with where he was last night.”
