WHAT IT MEANS: In short, Mike D'Antoni is no longer the head coach of the New York Knicks. Mike Woodson is expected to be named interim head coach in his place.

SURPRISE!: No question D'Antoni was on the hot seat, but for him to resign with 24 games left in the last year of his contract?

No one saw that coming, especially with the deep talent on the team.

After Wednesday morning's shootaround, while addressing the media, D'Antoni, Jeremy Lin and Carmelo Anthony did a great job, if they knew, of covering up any possibility that the head coach would resign a few hours later.

WHY IT HAPPENED: There is some school of thought within NBA circles that D'Antoni didn't want to resign, but he was frustrated trying to blend two offenses together. The Knicks had been clearly struggling, and that struggle specifically centered around D'Antoni trying to orchestrate his beloved point guard-focused and spread-out offense while dealing with Anthony's love for isolation.

It seems to be clearer now that D'Antoni wished he was still working with his pre-Melo squad that focused on Raymond Felton and Amare Stoudemire running the pick-and-roll with Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler as the primary shooters.

But the team dynamics changed, and they changed again when Anthony returned on Feb. 20 after a groin injury -- and it's still not working.

WHAT'S NEXT: Now, Woodson is left with a team fighting to stay on as the eighth seed. The talent, as I mentioned, is there, but the bigger issue will continue to be Lin vs. Melo.

That's not something that's going to change overnight.

THE QUESTION: Are you glad to see D'Antoni depart? Who would you like to see as his long-term replacement?
