This month has really felt like March Madness for the Knicks, starting with the team's coaching change to their recent slew of injures.

Currently, the Knicks' more serious injuries include Jeremy Lin (sore left knee), Amare Stoudemire (bulging disk) and Jared Jeffries (right knee inflammation), and their not as serious include Carmelo Anthony (groin), Tyson Chandler (groin) and Baron Davis (hamstring). Overall, these ailments have climbed the Knicks to the 10th spot in the latest list of the most banged-up teams this season. (Their cross-river rival, the Nets, are first.)

The below chart summarizes the number of injuries reported by each team and the number of different players injured. Keep in mind that the list does not include instances like Kobe Bryant's broken nose (he did not miss any time) and Brandon Roy's retirement (obviously a huge impact, but not an in-season injury).

Entering Saturday, here's a breakdown of how many games each noteworthy Knick has missed this season due to injury (starting from the beginning of the season):
  • Baron Davis (herniated disk in preseason) -- 32 games
  • Jared Jeffries (sore right calf in preseason and later on a sore/inflamed right knee) -- 19 games
  • Iman Shumpert (sprained right MCL on Dec. 25 and later on left knee tendinitis) -- seven games
  • Amare Stoudemire (sprained left ankle on Dec. 29) -- two games
  • Carmelo Anthony (sprained right wrist on Jan. 12 and later on a strained right groin) -- 10 games
  • Josh Harrellson (fractured right wrist on Jan. 21) -- 21 games
  • Bill Walker (sore right knee on Jan. 16 and later on a left elbow injury in February) -- 22 games
  • Tyson Chandler (strained left hamstring on March 6) -- two games
  • Jeremy Lin (sore left knee in late March) -- three games

Even with the perceived difficulty of the shortened season, one veteran NBA team doctor said that hasn't led to more injuries across the board. Instead, according to the doctor, the number of player injury DNP's is more due to the condensed schedule, where there are more games during the week.

"If you look at the statistics, the injury rates aren't up that much as you would expect," the doctor said. "Part of it is having the shorter training camp, which cuts down on a lot of the injuries that people have in training camp. People are missing more games because if you have five games a week and you miss a week, you're going to miss more games. There are more games played during a shorter period of time. The injury that keeps you out a week will cause you to miss more games in a shortened season."
