The Knicks didn't practice on Monday, but Amare Stoudemire scrimmaged with teammates for the third time since going down with a back injury, according to coach Mike Woodson.

Woodson said Stoudemire is out for Tuesday's game against Boston. A source close to Stoudemire said the Knicks power forward is unlikely to play against New Jersey on Wednesday either.

But there is a possibility that he returns to the team later this weekend, either Friday night against Cleveland or Sunday against Atlanta, according to the source.

"It's a possibility," the source said.

Woodson checked with Stoudemire after he received treatment before Sunday's game against Miami and said the forward's status remains 'day-to-day.'

"I’m sure when he’s ready they’re going to let me know," Woodson said. "Yesterday he played a little bit more. So I’ve just got to go in and see how he’s feeling."

Woodson doesn't have a set number of games that he'd like to see Stoudemire in before the postseason.

"If he comes back and says, 'I want to play the last game', that’s all we got," Woodson said. "I can’t worry about it. I want Amare back in uniform because I think he’s a big piece of what we’re trying to do in New York and he adds a lot to our team. If he comes back and says, 'Hey, I’m going to play in the playoffs' –- maybe he might do that, I don’t know. If he does, I’m accepting that because we need Amare.

"....I don’t know what more I can tell you. It’s not up to me. It’s going to be up to Amare and the doctors to determine whether he steps back on the floor this season."

Tyson Chandler believes that, for Stoudemire, practice is more important than playing in games so he can get rhythm and take contact before returning to the floor.

"He's a veteran and he's been through this before but I think (he needs) to get some rhythm," Chandler said.

Stoudemire had an epidural shot to relieve the pain on March 29. The team originally said he'd be out two to four weeks. If he plays against Cleveland, it will be three weeks from the shot.

The Knicks have gone 7-4 in Stoudemire's absence.

BARON BANGED UP: Baron Davis left shoot around before the rest of his teammates to receive treatment on his injured knee but he will play against Boston. Due to various injuries, Davis has been limited to around 25 minutes per game.
