Iman Shumpert saw it happening late in Sunday's game against Miami: Carmelo Anthony scoring at will while the rest of the teams stands around and watches it happen.
Shumpert says the Knicks can't let that happen again.
"(Sunday) we got in one of those spells where we were just looking for him to make plays instead of cutting and playing with him. We were just sort of watching," he said in an interview with ESPN 1050's "The Michael Kay Show." "So I felt like just going into next game we know right now Melo's in a mode where he's going to make plays for himself as well as everybody else on the team. We just have to make sure that we stay sharp, we stay aggressive and we continue to play off of him."
Anthony had 42 points on Sunday against Miami but the rest of the Knicks' starting five combined for just 19 points on 37 percent shooting.
Anthony has carried the team since Jeremy Lin and Amare Stoudemire went down with injuries, averaging 33 points on 52 percent shooting in their absence. But the Knicks have struggled to find a secondary scorer in that same span.
Some nights, it's been Shumpert. Others, it's been J.R. Smith.
But no one has emerged as a consistent threat. The Knicks hope that Stoudemire can come back and fill that void.
Shumpert, however, thinks the Knicks have enough talent on offense to support Anthony.
"I think we have plenty of guys that can step up and make shots," Shumpert said. "Steve Novak can step up and make shouts. If need be, I can set up and make shots. J.R. Smith's out there to make shots."
Also, Shumpert is confident that the Knicks can hang with the Heat or the Bulls in the first round of the playoffs. The Knicks are in the seventh spot in the East. If the season finished before teams tipped off on Tuesday, the Knicks would face Miami.
"We know we can beat anybody on a given night," Shumpert said. "We don't think there's anybody that can just demolish us in a seven-game series. So we're looking to play well against both of those teams when we see them in the first round."
