Last year's NBA 2K12 video game featured the "NBA Greatest" mode, which included Patrick Ewing as one of 15 legends fans could play as.
Starting on Oct. 2 with the release of NBA 2K13, gamers can work the ball through Ewing in the post as a member of the 1992 Dream Team. 2K Sports announced on Wednesday that arguably the greatest basketball team ever assembled, along with the 2012 Olympic team, will be featured in the video game series for the first time. The only player in the game not in the red, white and blue is Scottie Pippen, who couldn't come to terms with 2K Sports.
Pippen's former Bulls teammate, Michael Jordan, who's been involved with the NBA 2K series since 2011, said it's going to be exciting for fans because they'll be able to continue the debate as to which team is better.
"Either way, I think it's going to be great for the fans," Jordan said during a media conference call on Tuesday. "I think they're going to have an opportunity to have their own debate, and when you try to debate both Dream Teams, either way it comes out with a gold medal."
But MJ made it clear who he thinks is the better squad.
"The '92 Dream Team I felt was a more well-rounded basketball team," he said. "Kobe [Bryant] thought we were a little old, but we only had two players who were over 30 at the time. That was Magic [Johnson] and Larry [Bird]. The team itself would've been well-rounded defensively, offensively, inside-outside. I just felt like we had enough size that we could contend with the 2012 team.
"I think one of the things that the 2012 team lacked was size, and we probably would've attacked them from inside and then outside. Granted, I think those guys are much more athletic than maybe we were at that particular time, but I'd like to think that we were a little bit smarter and well-groomed about playing at that level of basketball. So in all honestly, I don't think we would've had any problems with them."
Jason Argent, vice-president of marketing for 2K Sports, said that for several years fans had asked that the Dream Team be included in the game. But it didn't become a reality until music mogul and Nets minority owner Jay-Z came aboard as the game's new executive producer after MJ and spearheaded the Olympic movement in 2K13.
"As executive producer, letting fans go head-to-head with these legendary USA teams was extremely important to Jay-Z,” Argent said. "We are excited to partner with USA Basketball, and share in Jay-Z's enthusiasm in making this a reality in NBA 2K13."
The video game will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for a suggested retail price of $59.99. It will also be available on the Wii, PC and PlayStation Portable. The upcoming Nintendo Wii U system will also carry the game.
