Rapid Reaction: Amare Stoudemire's All-Star Performance

Recap | Box score

WHAT IT MEANS: Fittingly, Kobe Bryant was the star among stars, playing in front of his home crowd at the Staples Center. The game MVP scored 37 points, six away from breaking Wilt Chamberlain's 42-point record set in 1962. But while the Black Mamba injected his poison into most of the East's defense, as he led the West to a 148-143 victory, it didn't stop Amare Stoudemire from seizing his first All-Star appearance as a Knick (sixth overall). After the Knicks beat the Hawks on Wednesday, he said his sprained right big toe felt great, and tonight he went out tying LeBron James with an East high of 29 points. Stoudemire also had six rebounds, two assists and only one turnover. Stoudemire and James were on the same page all night, reflected in James' game-high 10 assists. In fact, they connected with each other on the first two plays of the game. James assisted Stoudemire on a one-hand dunk and then a layup, respectively. Not only was Stoudemire swoopin' and hoopin', as Walt Frazier would say, but he also demonstrated the leadership he brings to the Knicks every game. Several times he was the first guy off the bench to congratulate his teammates.

STAT VS. PAT: Entering the game, a Knick had not started in an All-Star Game since 1992 (Patrick Ewing). Although Ewing was voted in as a starter in 1997, he didn't play due to injury. Stoudemire's 29 points were nine points better than the former big man's highest total in any All-Star Game. The most Ewing scored was 20 in 1994. Frazier and Bob McAdoo, who was traded to the Knicks 20 games into the 1976-77 season, share the record for most points scored by a Knick in an ASG (30). Frazier did it in 1975 and was named game MVP, and McAdoo went for that much, along with 10 rebounds, in 1977.

STAT'S SNEAKS: All-Star Weekend is a showcase for new looks to players’ signature sneakers. Stoudemire wore the Nike Air Max Fly By in blue and black, inspired by the East's uniform colors.

Here’s what STAT wore in his previous five All-Stars (he wasn't selected in 2006):

  • 2010: Nike Air Max Hyperize in red and black

  • 2009: Nike Foamposite Lite in red and gold

  • 2008: Nike Air Max STAT 360 in white and gold

  • 2007: Nike Air Force 25 in white and gold

  • 2005: Nike Air Force STAT in grey

Wondering what Landry Fields wore in Friday’s Rookie Challenge? Those were the Zoom Kobe VI in a NIKEiD Knicks' blue and orange colorway. Fields has said Bryant is his boyhood idol.
