According to league sources, the contracts for Murry and Smith are non-guaranteed, meaning the Knicks are under no financial obligation to the players if they don't make the team.
ESPNNewYork.com had previously reported Smith would be in camp with the Knicks, and ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported earlier this month that Murry had chosen the Knicks over the Heat's training camp invite.
Smith, 6-2, 195-pounds, averaged 5.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists over 19.9 minutes in five games for New York’s entry at the 2013 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
Smith played on the Knicks' summer league team last July but underwent patella tendon surgery in October.
"I can't wait to see him get out there and show what he can do. He's been working so hard to get an opportunity and a chance. I think he'll do a great job," J.R. Smith said last month. "The key to success is to work hard and work smart ... I think he's been doing that."
Murry, at 6-5 and 190-pounds, averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals over 20.8 minutes in five games this summer in Las Vegas. He helped lead Rio Grande to the NBA D-League Championship last season, averaging 8.3 points, on 45.6-percent shooting, with 2.8 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.61 steals over 23.5 minutes in 46 regular season games (30 starts).
Murry impressed Mike Woodson and the Knicks front office with strong play over the summer.
The Knicks have 12 players under guaranteed contracts so, in theory, there are three spots open in training camp. C.J. Leslie and Jeremy Tyler's contract are partially guaranteed, meaning the Knicks would have to pay each player if they chose to cut him.
MELO WON'T TALK CONTRACT: Anthony told the Associated Press on Wednesday that he does not plan to talk about his early termination option during the season. Anthony can opt out of the final year of his current contract with the Knicks and test free agency, if he chooses.
"I'm just not going to do it," he told the AP about discussing his free agency. "I'm going to let everybody know the first day that I'm not going to talk about it. Hopefully you guys and your colleagues respect that, and that's it."
