GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Due to uncertainty surrounding Amar'e Stoudemire's balky knees, Mike Woodson couldn't say on Tuesday whether Stoudemire would be ready for the season opener.

"It's hard for me to even comment on that, I think right now it's nice to see him out today on the floor. But we've just got to take it a day at a time," Woodson said. "We're not rushing; let's put it that way.

"We want to make sure when he steps on the floor that he's right for the minutes that we decide to give him," Woodson added.

Stoudemire has undergone three knee surgeries in the past year and will be limited in training camp as he tries to build strength in his oft-injured knees. He is going to play under a minutes limit this season. Last season, the team's medical staff limited him to 20 minutes per game. His limit this season hasn't been determined.

"I've got to be smart enough this year to really maximize his [time on the floor]," Woodson said. "I don't think we can really play him 30 minutes. I think, coming back, along with the medical staff, we've got to groom some minutes that are beneficial for our team when he's out on the floor."

Stoudemire played in just 29 regular-season games due to recurring knee issues. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on both knees to clean out debris.

The 11-year veteran also had microfracture surgery on his knee in 2005.

Stoudemire is entering the fourth season of a five-year, $100 million contract with the Knicks. He has two years and $45 million left on his deal, which is uninsured due to his previous knee issues.
