Mills: Knicks can be 'something special'

So far, new Knicks president and GM Steve Mills likes what he sees.

According to published reports, Mills was highly complimentary of the Knicks’ roster during an interview with reporters in Toronto on Friday.

He went as far as to say the 2013-14 Knicks have “the makings of something special.”

It should be noted Mills presumably had no input in putting the roster together. He took over for ex-GM Glen Grunwald less than a week before training camp in a surprising move by Knicks owner and MSG chairman James Dolan.

Mills has been on hand at every training camp session -- just as Grunwald was -- and is impressed by what he sees.

"I clearly believe in Mike Woodson as a coach," Mills said. "I think we have great players here. You rarely come across a player like Carmelo Anthony. There are going to be bumps in the road along the way to anything. We'll be patient, but I think we have the makings of something special.

"I don't think we'll make harsh reactions when things get tough. We also have to stick to a plan to try and have something we're building toward the future. We won't overreact to situations."

Mills was complimentary of new acquisition Andrea Bargnani and the Knicks’ depth at point guard. New York has Raymond Felton, Pablo Prigioni and Beno Udrih at the position.

This season poses a significant challenge for Mills, as Anthony can opt out of his contract and test free agency in the summer.

Mills has stated that the Knicks are going to do what it takes to retain Anthony.

"While it is premature in the process, we have made it very clear we have every intention of making Carmelo a Knick for a long time to come," Mills said late last month.

Mills also reflected Friday on his previous tenure at Madison Square Garden. He was the President of MSG Sports for a period during a 10-year run that spanned the late 1990s and early 2000s. The franchise struggled during Mills’ tenure. Isiah Thomas was hired as GM and coach during that time, and the Knicks made the playoffs just once in seven seasons.

"What I learned is this team and this building and the history of this franchise mean a whole lot to a whole lot of people," Mills said. "You have an obligation to try and build it up and make it as successful as you possibly can. What I'm committed to doing is doing everything I can do to help us win a championship."
