The Knicks played like a team that would rather be home watching football Sunday than playing the Spurs. New York trailed San Antonio, 61-45, after two quarters. Here are a few observations:

Smith struggles: J.R. Smith didn't make much of an impact. Smith, making his season debut following a five-game suspension for violating the league's drug policy, missed all five of his shots and had three turnovers in 13 first-half minutes. He's shown plenty of rust, but he isn't the only reason the Knicks were down 16.

San Antonio outrebounded the Knicks by nine, taking advantage of Tyson Chandler's absence. New York also allowed the Spurs to shoot 62 percent from the floor and 43 percent from 3-point land.

The Knicks, on the other hand, hit just 40 percent of their field goals and made just two of nine 3-point attempts.

Solid start for Bargs: Andrea Bargnani's one of the few Knicks who played well in the opening half. The seven-footer has 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Carmelo Anthony scored 14 on an efficient 5-for-6 shooting and had five rebounds.

The Knicks had tough time guarding the perimeter and stopping the Spurs in transition. Tony Parker (12 points), Long Island's Danny Green (11 points) and Kawhi Leonard (12 points) took advantage of the soft perimeter defense. Parker (6 assists) found plenty of soft spots in the paint against New York, who's looking to avoid its first three-game home losing streak since January 2012.
