Woody appreciates Dolan's support

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Mike Woodson thinks it's "great" that owner James Dolan gave him a public vote of confidence.

But he isn't losing any sleep over his job security.

"It's great support, trust me when I say that. But again, I haven't lived my dream as a coach worrying about the security of my job. Trust me when I tell you that," Woodson said after the Knicks' practice on Friday.

Some have questioned Woodson's job security in the wake of the Knicks' slow start. New York (3-8) has lost four straight and six in a row at home. That's not ideal for a team that entered the season with championship expectations.

"I got a job to do and that's trying to get this team headed in the right direction," Woodson said. "This is not about me. This is about our team digging ourselves out of the hole. Thank God that nobody's running away with our division. Everybody's right there."

The Raptors lead the division at 5-7. So despite all of their struggles, the Knicks enter play Friday just 1 1/2 games out of first place.

Maybe that's one reason why Dolan fully supports Woodson. Dolan said in an interview with the New York Post on Friday that he's confident Woodson can turn things around.

"I have a lot of confidence in Woodson, and one thing I can say about Mike is he has the respect of all the players. They all respect him. And he treats them fairly and relatively equally, and that's part of where the respect emanates from," Dolan said. "And those are hard things to get from a coach. When a coach loses a team ... that's when a coach is kind of done."

Woodson is under contract through next season. He guided the Knicks to 54 wins last season and their first playoff series win in 13 seasons. Dolan says he sees Woodson as the head coach who can end the franchises 41-year title drought.

"It's a question of: Can you get there?" Dolan said. "With Mike, I think he can get us there. Mostly, I think Carmelo [Anthony] can get us there, and the other players can get us there. They're going to have to jell and I think Mike can do a lot to get that to happen. Because he has their respect."

Said Woodson: "I think it's great that the owner's come out and given me a vote of support and that he believes in me. And I believe in him. ... But at the end of the day, I got a job to do and that's trying to get this team headed in the right direction."
