The New York Knicks won an Eastern Conference title in 1999, James Dolan's first year overseeing the team. They reached the conference final in Dolan's second season.

Since then, though, the Knicks have won just one playoff series. That's not good.

That could be one reason Dolan came in last in ESPN.com's ownership rankings, voted on by its Forecast panel.

The panel ranked the owners on a scale of 0 to 10 based on on how well each performs the task of feeding and caring for its team.

Dolan has been widely criticized during his ownership of the Knicks. In addition to on-court struggles, Dolan's perceived meddling in front-office and coaching decisions have irked some fans.

"My goal isn't to be loved," Dolan said last month on ESPN New York 98.7 FM's "The Michael Kay Show." "My goal is to win."

"As far as being liked and disliked, I know what my job is. I know what I have to do. I go about doing it," Dolan said. "You're not going to be liked by everybody. If your goal is to be liked by everybody, I don't think you're going to do such a good job because you're going to worry more about that than making the right decisions."

Give Dolan credit for this: The guy isn't shy about spending money. The Knicks consistently rank among the league leaders in payroll. Dolan recently agreed to pay Phil Jackson $60 million over five years to run the Knicks. We assume Dolan's ranking will improve if Jackson can turn around the Knicks and snap their 41-year title drought.
