The Knicks are on the verge of signing enigmatic forward Lamar Odom, according to ESPN.com's Marc Stein. Is the team making a wise move -- or a mistake?
Let's take a look at the pros and cons:
Sign him: This is a low-risk, high-reward transaction. If Odom is signed before Wednesday's deadline, he will be with the Knicks for two months before free agency. The team will then have time to evaluate him and determine whether he can get in shape -- both physically and mentally -- to contribute in 2014-15.
It's worth remembering that before all of his troubles, Odom flourished under Phil Jackson, winning two titles and the Sixth Man Award in 2010-11.
Don't do it: There are several red flags here. Odom, 34, has reportedly had issues with substance abuse in the past and has been through a rocky 12 months. Last summer, he was arrested on a DUI charge. In December, he divorced reality TV star Khloe Kardashian. Several NBA teams shied away from giving Odom, a Queens native, another shot this season.
The Knicks have to ask themselves if Odom's issues are likely to resurface in New York.
Off-court drama aside, Odom is still recovering from a back injury that cut short his stint in the Spanish League this season. So there are several unknowns surrounding the former Christ the King High School star.
Our take: This is a move that carries little risk but can provide a big reward. The Knicks should bring Odom in and give him a chance to prove himself.
Question: Do you think the Knicks should sign Odom?
