Reggie Miller to Kerr: Consider your options

The Knicks would like to hire TNT analyst Steve Kerr as their head coach sometime in early May, sources tell ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.

But Kerr’s broadcasting buddy, Reggie Miller, thinks Kerr should take some time to consider his options.

Miller tweeted:

Kerr and Jackson met twice last weekend to discuss the job. Since that meeting, Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni has resigned, creating an opening in Los Angeles. There is also speculation that the Warriors may part ways with coach Mark Jackson if Golden State loses to the Clippers in Round 1 of the playoffs.

Those are the opportunities that Miller is likely referencing when he talks about Kerr. It should be noted that Miller was a long-time Knicks' nemesis as a player with the Pacers. He and Kerr work together as NBA broadcasters for TNT.

The idea that Kerr would want to coach a team on the West Coast isn't a new one.

Some reports have suggested that Kerr would strongly consider coaching on the West Coast if the opportunity arose because it would leave him closer to his California-based family.

Stein reports that “NBA coaching sources have maintained for weeks that the Warriors have strong interest in Kerr should they elect to part ways with Mark Jackson after a 51-win season, given Kerr's strong relationships with Warriors owner Joe Lacob, son Kirk Lacob (who works in Golden State's front office) and Warriors president Rick Welts, with whom Kerr worked closely in Phoenix.”

But Stein also reported earlier this week that sources repeated that the Knicks, because of the former Chicago Bulls guard's close relationship with Jackson, are the clear front-runners to land Kerr.

Kerr won three titles while playing under Jackson with the Bulls.

Both Jackson and Kerr have talked openly about having a mutual respect for one another.

"I know Phil [said] we shared the same space, which I think is well said," Kerr said last Sunday when asked if he'd have to use the triangle offense if he coaches the Knicks. "We share a lot of the same philosophies. I learned a lot of my basketball from him and Tex Winter.

"It is safe to say that we have a lot of the same ideas. As far as getting into the details of the triangle and that sort of thing, I am not going to expand on that. Obviously there is a strong connection between us and our beliefs."
