NEW YORK –- Carmelo Anthony hasn’t had much to smile about with the New York Knicks' season sinking rapidly.

But he did have a laugh on Tuesday night at his own expense. After a play was whistled dead, Anthony attempted to dunk the ball from right underneath the basket, but his 31-year-old body wasn’t having any of it.

The Knicks star’s one-handed dunk was denied by the rim, and he was sent stumbling backward as Trail Blazers and Knicks players stood watching. The crowd at Madison Square Garden buzzed at the blunder with 3:02 left in the first quarter of a 104-85 loss to Portland.

“I was trying to figure out if I had my legs underneath me,” Anthony said after the Knicks lost for the 15th time in their last 18 games. “My mind and my body was telling me different things.”

The good-natured Anthony took it in stride and laughed and smiled at his blunder.

“You gotta laugh at yourself,” said Anthony, who finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. “You [just] gotta laugh at yourself.”
