EBR hearing over, no timing on decision

By Jared Zwerling

The highly anticipated Early Bird Rights hearing between the NBA players' association and the league took place Wednesday and lasted about 3½ hours at the NBA counsel office, but no decision was made.

A union representative told ESPN New York that the arbitrator, Kenneth Dam, will decide before the July 1 start of free agency but has "no idea how soon."

The only other people present in the meeting, which took place at the global law firm Proskauer in Times Square, were lawyers for both the NBA and NBPA, as well as Knicks forward Steve Novak, who made a surprise appearance.

At issue is whether a player obtained off waivers can retain his Early Bird Rights with the team that acquired him. The Knicks claimed Jeremy Lin and Novak off waivers this past season.
