W2W4: Knicks vs. Nets
By Ian Begley
The Knicks are 16-4 when Carmelo Anthony is in the lineup. They are 2-2 in four games when he's out with an injury.
They may be playing game No. 5 without their star on Wednesday night against Brooklyn. Anthony is a game-time decision for Round 3 of the East River Rivalry due to lingering soreness in his sprained left ankle.
Here are a few things to watch during Knicks-Nets on Wednesday:
MELO FELLOW: If the Knicks don't have Anthony, they don't have their top scorer (27.9) and No. 2 rebounder (6.4).
Sure, they beat the Heat by 20 without Anthony but they also lost in ugly fashion to the Rockets on Monday night.
The numbers below show how much the Knicks miss Anthony when he's hurt.
Per 48 minutes, the Knicks are outscoring opponents by 11.3 points with Anthony on the court. With him off the court, New York is getting outscored by 1.7 points per 48.
SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE: More than one-third of the Knicks' points (34.7%) have come from 3-pointers.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, New York's 11.9 made 3-pointers per game and 29.5 attempts are the most by any team since the 3-point line was instituted in 1979-80.
Brooklyn, which has lost five of its last seven games at MSG, has allowed opponents to hit just 5.7 3-pointers per game, the third-fewest in the NBA.
The Nets held the Knicks to 6-for-21 shooting from 3-point range in their Nov. 26 overtime win but the Knicks went 14-for-28 in their win two weeks later.
CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARDS: The Knicks and Nets have split their first two meetings. The outcome in Game 3 could be swayed by what happens on the glass.
Brooklyn is one of the stronger offensive rebounding teams in the league.
The Knicks, however, are not.
They rank 27th in rebounding differential. Their opponents are outrebounding them by an average of 3.6 boards per night.
Another stat to watch on Wednesday? The turnover.
The Knicks are 3-6 when they turn the ball over 12 or more times this season compared to 15-0 when they turn the ball over fewer than 12 times. They are also 4-1 after a loss.
