Melo: Knicks shouldn't be in trade talks
By Ian Begley
Carmelo Anthony said he doesn't want to see Iman Shumpert leave the Knicks in a trade.
Carmelo Anthony put his general manager hat on Sunday afternoon and said that the Knicks shouldn't make any moves at the trade deadline. He also believes that Iman Shumpert, who is coveted by at least one Western Conference team, will not be traded in the next 11 days.
Anthony is the Knicks' star player, not the general manager. But it would be foolish to think his words and opinions don't carry weight in the front office.
He has a close relationship with Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan, who was the driving force behind the trade to acquire Anthony near the deadline two years ago.
Anthony told ESPNNewYork's Ian O'Connor that he believed Shumpert was a valuable piece for the Knicks.
"He’s a big key. We need him," Anthony said of Shumpert, who has played 12 games following an eight-month rehab from ACL surgery. "We need him to get back 100 percent. He’s working, and the minutes he’s been playing (have) been productive for us on defensive end. I don’t know if they limited his minutes or not, but when he’s out there he’s doing what he does best."
Regarding potential moves, Anthony said to O'Connor: "We don’t need to make no moves. No, we’re good...what are we going to go get? I don’t know what we going to go get for him."
The Knicks, according to a league source, are listening to trade offers for Shumpert but a team source said a deal that would send the second-year guard to the Phoenix Suns for Jared Dudley as part of a multiplayer package is "unlikely at this point."
The Suns' interest in Shumpert and their willingness to include Dudley in a deal was first reported by Yahoo! Sports on Saturday night.
Mike Woodson talked to Shumpert about the reports before Sunday's game.
"He said don't worry about it. He said rumors are rumors," Shumpert said.
He added: "I don't really care. I've just got to play ball. I can't control it anyway. There's nothing to worry about. Something I can't control."
