Mitchell to work out for NYK on Friday

By Jared Zwerling draft expert Chad Ford has the Knicks taking Tony Mitchell, a power forward from North Texas, with their 24th pick on June 27.

Mitchell will be working out for the Knicks on Friday.

The workout represents the team's need for a big body inside who can score, defend and rebound. The 6-foot-9, 236-pound Mitchell has been compared to the Rockets' Thomas Robinson, who was the fifth selection in last year's draft. Last season, as a sophomore, Mitchell averaged 13 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game.

In his latest first-round projection, Ford writes this about Mitchell:

The Knicks have never shied away from taking a risk on a player. Mitchell has the upside of a top-10 pick, but he was in an awful situation in North Texas last season. With that in mind, his mediocre season might have been the best he could have done. He's an elite athlete and a terrific rebounder -- the Knicks could use both in its [sic] frontcourt.

In addition to Mitchell, Providence combo guard Ricardo Ledo will work out for the Knicks on Friday. Ford said "he could be the next Lance Stephenson."

Rounding out the other prospects who will be competing against Mitchell and Ledo: Grant Jerrett (Arizona forward), Tahj Tate (Delaware State guard), Adonis Thomas (Memphis forward) and Christian Watford (Indiana forward).
