Opening Tip: Trade rumors sinking Shump?

By Ian Begley

Monday's loss to Portland left the Knicks with plenty of questions about the team's present -- and it's future. One of the most pressing is this: What's up with Iman Shumpert?

Shumpert struggled mightily on Monday, going scoreless in 23 minutes. He went 0-for-3 from the field, had two turnovers and a steal. The Knicks were outscored by 22 when Shumpert was on the floor.

Iman Shumpert
Lately, we haven't seen the same Shump.
In the seven games prior to Monday, Shumpert was shooting just 36 percent from the field. He averaged just six points in 31 minutes per game. Not good.

You have to wonder if Shumpert's play is being impacted by the trade rumors surrounding him.

Several outlets, including ESPN.com, have reported that the Knicks are in talks with several teams to try to find a landing spot for Shumpert, their first-round pick in 2011.

The guard appeared to lack his usual energy in the first half against Portland. And he also hurt the Knicks (3-10) late in the game.

In the fourth quarter, Shumpert had a turnover that led to a Wesley Matthews 3-pointer. The shot put the Blazers up, 13, and crushed any momentum the Knicks had at that juncture.

It was an ugly moment, and it leads us to today's question: What's up with Iman Shumpert? Are the trade rumors affecting his play?

Up now: The Knicks lost their sixth straight game on Monday, something they haven't done since March 2012 when Mike D'Antoni was the coach.

Also, Kobe Bryant inked a big extension on Monday. How does that impact the Lakers' pursuit of Carmelo Anthony this summer?

Lastly, we asked you if it's too early in the season for the Knicks to panic. Let us know your thoughts here.

What's next: The Knicks will practice on Tuesday to prepare for Chris Paul and the Clippers on Wednesday.
