Woodson: Martin will be out a little bit

By Ian Begley

NEW YORK -- It sounds like the Knicks will be without big man Kenyon Martin for a while.

Mike Woodson said before Saturday's game that Martin will be sidelined for "a little bit" due to an abdominal injury he suffered on Friday. The coach did not receive an official diagnosis from the team's medical staff as of Saturday evening.

"I know he's going to be out a little bit. I don't know how many weeks or days it's actually going to be," Woodson said. "They still are assessing him right now and seeing the severity of it so we'll have to just wait and see."

Martin initially suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Friday's game while diving for a loose ball or going after a blocked shot, he said.

Martin said on Friday that he hoped to be back on the floor soon. He was unavailable for Saturday's game against Atlanta.

One injury to keep in mind while thinking about Martin's situation?

Heat big man Chris Bosh suffered an abdominal strain in the 2012 playoffs and was forced to sit out close to three weeks due to the injury.

The Knicks can ill afford to lose Martin for an extended period. He's one of the few players on the roster who can defend the rim and rebound. Rim protection is at a premium with Tyson Chandler sidelined due to a broken right leg. The Knicks hope to get Chandler back next week.

Martin is also dealing with a chronic ankle issue. He missed two games due to ankle soreness earlier this week. The Knicks lost by 41 to Boston last Sunday and by 15 to Cleveland on Tuesday with Martin out.
