Survey says ... playoffs, but not 37 wins

By Matt Ehalt

The New York Knicks may not win 37 games.

But that will be good enough to grab the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

ESPN Forecast released its predictions for the rest of the regular season Tuesday, and it has the Knicks grabbing the eighth seed in the East with a 36-46 record. The Knicks would beat out the Pistons by one game for the final spot, and face top-seeded Indiana in the quarterfinals.

The Knicks were projected to win 37 games in the preseason by the SCHOENE system, which raised some eyebrows. The Knicks won 54 games last season, and had the core of their Atlantic Division-winning team coming back.

Sloppy play and a barrage of injuries, however, have the Knicks at 15-26 at the halfway point this season. The Knicks currently are not in the playoffs.

This projection has the Knicks going 22-19 to finish the season. The Knicks would finish third in the Atlantic Division, behind division-winning Toronto (44-38) and sixth-seeded Brooklyn (39-43), according to the ESPN Forecast. They are also projected to finish two games behind the Bulls for the No. 7 seed.
