The Warriors struggled to deal with the void left by injured big man Andrew Bogut in this year's playoffs. In light of those struggles, Golden State recognizes a need to acquire a big man this summer, according to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.
David Lee, back with the Knicks? Hey, you never know.
That’s where Chandler comes in.
The Warriors, you may remember, thought they had Chandler signed as a free agent back in 2011, but were outbid by the Knicks. And, according to Smith, Golden State may be interested in acquiring Chandler in a trade this summer.
“They still like Tyson Chandler,” Smith said on ESPN 98.7 FM’s “The Stephen A. Smith and Ryan Ruocco Show” on Wednesday.
One trade that would work financially for both teams? A swap of David Lee and Harrison Barnes in exchange for Chandler. It is unclear at this point if either team would consider such a swap.
“I believe there’s a possibility that the Golden State Warriors would trade those two guys for Tyson Chandler,” Smith said. “I’m not saying it’s definite but I really believe in my heart they would do it. And if there’s a possibility that they would do it, the New York Knicks have got to investigate it.”
One issue that may scare the Knicks away is the length of the contracts that they’d be taking back. Lee, a former Knick, is signed through the 2015-16 season. Barnes has a team option for that season. Lee is scheduled to make $15.5 million in 2015-16, so that would significantly eat into the Knicks’ cap space for the summer of 2015 and may jeopardize their ability to court free agents that summer.
Chandler is on the Knicks’ books for one more season. He is scheduled to make $14.5 million. The guess here is, the Knicks would prefer to keep Chandler and let his contract expire rather than take back a contract that compromises their 2015 cap space.
Another issue at play is the Warriors’ interest in Kevin Love. ESPN.com reported earlier this week that Golden State has discussed potential trade scenarios for Love involving both Lee and Barnes. Obviously if the Warriors land Love, any potential talks for Chandler are off the table.
