New York Mets: In-game report

Game 162: Nationals @ Mets

October, 3, 2010
10/03/10
12:23
PM ET
The season has ended. Nats 2, Mets 1 in 14 innings. The Mets finish at 79-83.

From ESPN Stats & Information: Oliver Perez finished 0-5. The only other Met ever to finish a season 0-and-(5-or-more) was John Franco who posted an 0-8 in 1998. Perez is only the second Met ever to get a loss while giving up three-plus walks, one-plus HBP's and zero hits. Scott Schoeneweis did it in June of 2008 (although one of his walks was intentional).
5:12 p.m.: Oliver Perez hits a batter and walks three while retiring only one batter. Pat Misch enters with the Nationals leading, 2-1, and the bases still loaded in the 14th.

4:57 p.m.: Oliver Perez enters for the 14th.

Game 155: Mets @ Phillies

September, 26, 2010
9/26/10
10:47
AM ET
4:49 p.m.: The Mets win the rubber game, 7-3. Carlos Beltran homers twice and David Wright also goes deep. Manny Acosta credited with the win. It marks only the fifth road series win this year. The others: at Baltimore, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Washington.

4:28 p.m.: Carlos Beltran has homered from both sides of the plate. His opposite-field two-run shot in the ninth off Ryan Madson gives the Mets a 7-3 lead. The shots scored Nick Evans, who was 3-for-5 and is hitting .379.

4:24 p.m.: Jimmy Rollins pinch hitting for Wilson Valdez with two out and man on second base in eighth inning. Rollins had been out since Sept. 8 because of a right hamstring strain. He grounds out to first, however, and Elmer Dessens gets through the frame unscathed. Rollins remains in the game at shortstop.

4:12 p.m.: Luis Castillo gets his first plate appearance in 15 days and strikes out as a pinch hitter in the eighth.

4:05 p.m.: Nick Evans makes a sliding backhand grab on Ryan Howard's bloop in shallow left field to end the seventh and keep the Phillies from drawing closer. Mets 5, Phillies 3.

4:01 p.m.: Pedro Feliciano relieving Manny Acosta in the seventh. Feliciano matches his own single-season franchise record for relief appearances with No. 88. The last major reliever to reach the 90-appearance plateau was Salomon Torres, who made 94 relief appearances with Pittsburgh in 2006. Before that, it was Kent Tekulve with 90 with Philadelphia in 1987.

3:43 p.m.: Carlos Beltran makes a diving catch in left-center against Ross Gload to end the sixth inning and preserve a 5-3 lead.

3:24 p.m.: Ryan Howard follows Chase Utley's long ball with a double to chase Pat Misch with two out in the fifth. Misch, who is 0-4 this season and 3-15 in his major league career, is pulled one out from being eligible for the win. Sean Green enters and strikes out Jayson Werth to end the fifth. Mets 5, Phillies 3.

3:15 p.m.: Chase Utley delivers a two-out, three-run homer against Pat Misch in the fifth as Philadelphia pulls within 5-3.

If the Mets hold on, Cole Hamels could drop to 0-4 vs. the Mets this season. He would be the first pitcher since Livan Hernandez in 1999 to go winless in four or more decisions in a season against the Mets, and the seventh pitcher overall, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The only other Phillie on that list: Grant Jackson in 1970. Remember, though, that the final scores in Hamels' 2010 losses to the Mets are 3-0, 1-0, 1-0. And they haven't scored this time, either.

2:58 p.m.: Carlos Beltran opens the fifth with a homer that chases Cole Hamels. Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling had been all over Beltran on the broadcast earlier in the game about not going hard to second on David Wright's double-play grounder. Meanwhile, in the fifth, Wright follows Beltran by striking out for the 156th time, tying the single-season record also held by Dave Kingman (1982) and Tommie Agee (1970).

The Mets' all-time single-season strikeout leaders:

Wright, 2010, 156
Kingman, 1982, 156
Agee, 1970, 156
Kingman, 1975, 153
Todd Hundley, 1996, 146
Mo Vaughn, 2002, 145
Mike Cameron, 2004, 143
Darryl Strawberry, 1986, 141
Wright, 2009, 140

2:39 p.m.: The Mets lead 4-0. Nick Evans bloops a ball in front of right fielder Jayson Werth, which then skips by him. Two runs score, although Jose Reyes is thrown out on the bases for the second time in the game to end the half-inning. Reyes is retired at the plate trying to score all the way from first base. Earlier, Reyes was thrown out attempting to steal third base.

2:37 p.m.: The Mets open a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Jose Reyes produces a bases-loaded infield single once Henry Blanco beats Raul Valdez's throw to second base. Cole Hamels has been grumpy with plate umpire Mike Winters' strike zone.

1:56 p.m.: David Wright belts his 26th homer to lead off the second inning as the Mets take a 1-0 lead against Cole Hamels. Wright now has 96 RBIs.

The Phillies can clinch a playoff spot with a win. According to ESPN's Mark Simon, the Mets have been the opponent in at least these clinchings:

1964 Cardinals clinched NL by beating Mets on last day of season.
1970 Pirates clinched NL East by beating Mets.
1992 Pirates clinched NL East by beating Mets.
2000 Braves clinched NL East vs Mets. Mets won next day to clinch wild card.

Feliciano: Mets should pay K-Rod

September, 18, 2010

The Major League Baseball Player's Association and the Mets will likely battle sometime next month over whether the Mets have to pay Francisco Rodriguez the portion of his 2010 salary that remains after his season-ending thumb injury.

If it were up to fellow reliever Pedro Feliciano, K-Rod would get paid.

The Mets placed Rodriguez on the disqualified list after he suffered a season-ending thumb injury that the Mets say occurred during an altercation with his girlfriend's father at Citi Field. The Mets are withholding the final $3,016,393 of his $11.5 million salary this year.

Feliciano told ESPNNewYork.com that he thinks the Mets should have to pay Rodriguez because the injury was non-baseball related, even though it occurred at the Mets' home park right after a game.

"I don’t think so," he said when asked if the Mets should be allowed to withhold K-Rod's salary. "That was something that was outside of baseball. What happened was family issues. I think he should be back next year and have it be a regular year."

Jose Reyes has contacted K-Rod through text message but other players said they have neither heard from nor reached out to the closer.

"It’s one of those times where you want to leave him alone a little bit," Oliver Perez said.

Rodriguez will be arrested and re-arraigned on charges of criminal contempt before his next court appearance, which is scheduled for Oct. 7. Prosecutors allege that he texted his girlfriend, violating a court-order of protection.

Rodriguez faces third-degree assault and harassment charges for the alleged assault of Carlos Pena, the father of his girlfriend, Daian Pena.

Game 147: Pirates @ Mets

September, 16, 2010
9/16/10
2:57
PM ET
10:23 p.m.: Bobby Parnell closes it out. Mets win, 6-2, and sweep the four-game series from Pittsburgh, which is now 0-7 lifetime at Citi Field. The Mets moved over .500 for the first time since Aug. 24. Mike Pelfrey picks up his 15th victory.

10:12 p.m.: Angel Pagan drives in two runs in the eighth. Mets 6, Pirates 2.

9:46 p.m.: Ike Davis' sacrifice fly scores Angel Pagan in the seventh against Chris Resop. Mets 4, Pirates 2.

9:32 p.m.: Mike Pelfrey strikes out Neil Walker on an 85 mph split-finger fastbal to end the seventh and strand two Pirates in scoring position. Mets lead, 3-2, at the Seventh Inning Stretch. Pelfrey hugs Jerry Manuel in the dugout.

9:17 p.m.: Mike Pelfrey gives himself a lead with an RBI double in the sixth off reliever Sean Gallagher. Lucas Duda scores after his second straight double. Mets 3, Pirates 2, bottom 6.

8:32 p.m.: Lucas Duda snaps an 0-for-23 skid with a two-run double in the fourth that evens the score at 2. It is only Duda's second major league hit in 35 at-bats.

8:19 p.m.: Will the Mets place Angel Pagan in center field and Carlos Beltran in a corner outfield spot in 2011? That's for whomever is GM and manager to decide. But Pagan provided evidence Thursday night that it's the sensible alignment, as he manned center field with Beltran out of the lineup. Pagan made a sliding catch on the track in right-center to retire John Bowker in the fourth inning, then doubled Pedro Alvarez off first base. Ronny Cedeno did follow with an RBI triple as the Pirates took a 2-0 lead against Mike Pelfrey. Charlie Morton, who entered 1-11 with a 9.05 ERA, has held the Mets scoreless through three innings.

The start of the game will be delayed 10 minutes by a violent late-afternoon storm. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 p.m.
