Jerry Manuel used Raul Valdes in both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers, but the manager indicated late Wednesday night that Valdes would still be able to make Saturday's spot start against the Washington Nationals.

Actually, Manuel mentioned Steve Popper, a beat writer for the Bergen Record, as an alternative should Valdes be unable to pitch. Oliver Perez's name did not come up at all.

Of course, the forecast for Thursday's game is bad. And if that series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers is called, it would not be made up. That would alleviate the need for the spot starter, since Dillon Gee could go Friday, Pat Misch on Saturday and Mike Pelfrey on Sunday.
