The Mets have formally asked permission to speak with Marlins assistant GM Dan Jennings, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports.
Crasnick writes: "Jennings is one of the most respected talent evaluators in the business. He drafted a ton of talent in Tampa Bay."
Jennings appeared on ESPNNewYork.com's list of likely candidates on Monday night. The list of potential interviewess also includes:
Sandy Alderson. Currently working for Major League Baseball, cleaning up Latin American affairs. He previously served as Oakland Athletics GM and San Diego Padres CEO.
Al Avila. A vice president/assistant GM with the Detroit Tigers, he was a finalist for the Seattle Mariners job that went to Jack Zduriencik. While with the Florida Marlins, he oversaw drafting of Josh Beckett and signing of Miguel Cabrera.
Josh Byrnes. Former Diamondbacks general manager.
Jon Daniels. Current Texas Rangers GM, he has an out in his contract. No indication he wants to leave Texas with business unfinished there, but he grew up a Mets fan in Queens.
Jerry Dipoto. Served as interim GM with the Diamondbacks after Byrnes’ ouster. Dipoto was a reliever for the Mets in 1995 and ’96.
Joe Garagiola Jr. Senior VP for Major League Baseball. Formerly GM of Arizona Diamondbacks. Son of former major league catcher.
Rick Hahn. VP/Assistant GM for the Chicago White Sox. Baseball America has tabbed him as No. 1 GM prospect. Has negotiated contracts for Mark Buehrle, Paul Konerko and Matt Thorton.
John Hart. Former GM of the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers. Currently works for MLB Network.
Thad Levine. Assistant GM with the Texas Rangers. Previously senior director of baseball operations for the Colorado Rockies. Levine and fellow Rangers executive A.J. Preller are considered throughout baseball as up-and-comers. Preller bears watching as well.
