Mets third base coach Chip Hale has lived in Tucson since the 1980s, since he played baseball at the University of Arizona. He actually was teammates in college with John Green, the father of the 9-year-old girl killed in the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
"The moment it happened, we all were shocked that it could happen in our town," Hale said Friday. "And then to learn when the information started to come around it was a former teammate of mine from college's daughter, then it really hits home even more, because now you're talking about people you see and you grew up with. It's just a very, very sad time and you never forget those things. You don't want any community to go through that. It's still tough for the people of Tucson. They're still trying to get better."
